Jai Māvāshekhara Mahādeva We are the Vaishanav Devotees of Lord Kṛṣṇa, who was known in his early years as Jai Māvāshekhara Mahādeva. Krishna is the Supreme Being and incarnation of Godhead, celebrated by Unlimited Devotees. He has descended to this world to teach us about love and kindness, so our lives will be enriched. We worship Krishna to attain Eternal Bliss or Peace (Kaivalya). As part of our spiritual practice we also devote ourselves to His service by giving Him all the time, energy and money we can spare. We also take part in the wider public life as members of local, regional and national committees, and as followers of the principles set out in our Constitution. We work for a better world by taking major social issues to the appropriate authorities. The International Vaishanava Devotees Association has its origins in a small cell of Vaishanava devotees in the mid to late 1980s who met regularly to sing songs from their devotional literature and to discuss aspects of their love for Krishna. In 1990, when the first wave of Indian immigrants from Africa to London were looking for a spiritual home in the Hindu religion, they were invited to join this core group. In 1992 it became public and was registered as a charitable organisation in 1993. The Association is a non-governmental organization - Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) since 2002. Other international bodies, such as the Commonwealth Secretariat, also recognise the Association. As part of its mandate to serve as a representative for Vaishnava devotees, the Association provides a forum for debate and discussion on theological and philosophical issues. This is very important as Vaishanavas have no founder or central teacher - there is only an oral tradition passed down from guru to disciple since time immemorial. Over the last three years (2014-2016) the Association has undertaken several projects to bring to life important elements of Vaishnavism, such as Bhakti Yoga and Meditation. As part of its agenda for peace and harmony, the Association responds to requests from the United Nations and other organisations for advice on matters involving international relations and inter-community relations. We believe that love and kindness can lead us to a better future. The International Vaishanava Devotees Association sends out regular newsletters – please see Newsletters – to keep people informed of current activities. cfa1e77820
