Tamil Mankatha is a 2011 Indian Tamil-language gangster film written and directed by Prabhu Deva. It stars Ajith Kumar in the lead role with Kajal Aggarwal, Vaibhav Reddy, Lakshmi Rai, Sathyaraj and Santhanam portraying supporting roles. Produced by Kalpathi S. Aghoram, the film features music composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar while cinematography is handled by Raghu Murtlapillai with editing done by T. Suresh Urs and Anthony Jordon respectively. The film, which commenced shooting in April 2011, was released on 15 August 2011. Mankatha mainly received positive reviews upon release. It became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films within India and the overseas market. The film won awards including two Filmfare Awards, Best Film – Tamil at the 3rd South Indian International Movie Awards and Best Supporting Actress – Tamil at the 59th Filmfare Awards South to Lakshmi Rai for her performance. The film became a blockbuster hit in Ajith Kumar's career and was later remade into Telugu as "Gabbar Singh" (2012) starring Pawan Kalyan which also went onto become a commercial success at box office. The film opens with Santhanam singing the song "Mankatha" in front of a live audience. The story then cuts to Raghuvaran (Santhanam) introducing Mankatha Thalaivar (Ajith Kumar), who is being escorted to prison by policemen. As he is being walked, Ajith narrates how he was pushed into crime because of his father's reputation as a thief and his family's poverty. Ajith recollects how his father Mankatha Theivam (Vijayakumar) spent most of his time behind bars yet still managed to bring up five sons properly. Ajith's younger brother Mankatha Vijayakumar aka Manikya Theivam (Ajith) is a simple-minded bully who is the only son of a prison guard. A day, Ajith and Manikya follow a man named Subramaniyam (Kajal Aggarwal), who owns a small shop on the street. Manikya steals from him and falls in love with his daughter. He abandons his family and leaves home, but cannot forget her. In jail, Ajith hears about Subramaniyam from Subramaniyam's daughter Priya (Vaibhav Reddy). One day, the Thalaivar is released from prison. He tracks down Manikya through his friend Subramaniyam and asks him to leave his family, which causes conflict with Ajith. Later, Subramaniyam gets married to Priya, who agrees on condition that he will let her come in touch with Manikya. Ajith tries to stop the marriage but fails. Subramaniyam does not follow up on her promise and asks his children to release their father's old woman (Sathyanthi) who has been keeping watch over him in jail. cfa1e77820
